Street children project
Street children project
There are an estimated 437000 street children in Tanzania. Many live on the street because of the violence and abuse they suffered at home. Many more face daily abuse on the streets from the police, sex-tourism, forced labour, drugs/alcohol and even each other.
Outreach team:
The Outreach Team is the first step in our programme to build a relationship of trust with the child, identifying and understanding how the child came to be living on the street.
The goals are:
Drop-inn Centre:
The Drop-inn Centre offers the children food, hygiene facilities, medical and psychological care, non-formal education, Life skills (child rights, alcohol and drugs, organ trafficking, HIV etc) and recreational activities. The Drop-inn centre is a place where they can find safety, understanding and support. The children can come to the Drop-inn Centre during opening hours.
Transitional Home: (future plan)
The transitional Home offers accommodation in a save and secure environment. It is open day and night. Access to the home is completely voluntary. Children can decide how long they want to stay. The home offers a family like atmosphere with fulltime workers on hand to offer much needed care and stability. It is a hands-on approach where the children are fully involved at every level. The home offers access to child friendly education programmes, schools and vocational trainings. In addition, the home is used as an emergency shelter for children facing medical or Social emergencies
Re-integration:
The reintegration of each child into society is one of the most challenging and top priorities of Mama Dani Centre. We provide a comprehensive support plan adapted to the child holistic need. Together with the child we set out specific goals with progressive and achievable steps. The team works closely with families (if possible) to understand and try to solve the initial reason why the child is on the streets and try to reunite them and prevent them to live on the street again. Also, due to learn-work skills we try to provide an income for the older child so that they can provide for themselves and build a future.
Our recovery programme revolves around the child.
